Clive Widdowson (Fine Art)I studied at Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent Colleges of Art, graduating in 1976 with a B.A. Hons degree in Fine Art.
After graduating I worked in watercolour, pastel & pencil, which suited my style of work. Over many years I have developed my own individual technique combining watercolour, pencil and gouache. I am now venturing into acrylics, which complements my existing work.
The dramatic scenery of the Lake District and The Scottish Highlands is where I draw my inspiration. My approach to painting combines an accuracy of the landscape with a semi - abstract use of colour and light from different times of the day or season, to create an atmospheric feel to my work.
I never spend hours painting in one particular spot, instead I prefer to move around making quick sketches, studies and photographs. These are then used as the basis for my finished work back home. I start with a simple idea, add one or two colours and become engrossed as these sketches slowly evolve into a complex picture of colours and shapes.
I have at present a selection of pictures on display at the Thornthwaite Gallery near Keswick, The Lakeland Art Gallery, Grasmere and The Hideaway Coffee House, Lupton, South Lakes. I have exhibited on many occasions in Harrogate, Keswick, Windermere, Newcastle, Ilkley, and Oldham and my work has found its way to many parts of the UK as well as overseas, including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
As I get older my work continues to develop and change in ways I would never of imagined. Some say getting older makes you wiser but I like to think I am becoming less inhibited and more daring, taking on a “go on lets try it attitude”.
I am passionate about my work, which I feel is reflected in my pictures and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
